DURING A POWER OUTAGE
-
1. Utility Power is Lost
During a power outage, you will still lose power in your home.
-
2. Generator Takes on Power Supply
The transfer switch will automatically transfer your home’s power source over to the generator. This takes about 7 seconds. No action is needed.
-
3. Monitor Your Generator
Continue to monitor your generator daily during power outage for alerts through the mobile app or by checking the physical generator screen. Be sure to keep 5W30 full synthetic oil on hand to top up as necessary.
What to Expect
When you schedule an appointment with Clockwork HVAC for your Ottawa home generator installation, you can expect to discuss the following:
Generator location: your generator is a gas appliance, which means it exhausts and is combustible. It needs adequate space to vent and to ensure carbon monoxide is not entering your home. As certified gas technicians and certified Generac installers, our team determines a location prior to installation to meet all of these regulations.
Electrical connection and Panel size
Gas connection and fuel source:
If using propane, you may consider having an additional tank that supplies the generator directly to minimize the chance of running out of gas during a power outage or having continuous monitoring of the tanks to ensure your supply is topped off in a timely manner
If running on natural gas, it is important that your gas metre is sized correctly to supply enough gas to feed your generator when in use. Clockwork HVAC will assess the size and submit an application to Enbridge to change your meter size if it is not currently able to support the generator

Taking Care of Your Generator
CLEARANCES
You need a minimum of 3 feet distance from the sides and front of your generator. This includes plants and shrubbery, so be diligent about trimming and yard maintenance if necessary.
Be sure to keep the generator clear of snow if the winter as it could freeze the unit and interfere with your ability to service or operate your generator when needed.
You must have a 5 feet clearance above the generator so keep this in mind if adding a deck, awning, or other element above your generator.
If you are performing home renovations, such as adding windows or doors or central air conditioning or heat pumps, your contractor should be able to ensure that these changes do not interfere with the necessary clearances of the generator
REGULAR MAINTENACE
Oil and oil filter must be changed every year or every 100 running hours, whichever comes first (5W30 full synthetic oil, 070185E)
The air filter must be changed as required, approximately every 5 yearsSpark plugs must be replaced approximately every 2 years
The battery generally requires replacement every 3-5 years
Your generator is programmed to run a weekly test for 5 minutes to ensure continued proper operation
CODES
Yellow and green codes are non-critical, meaning there is something that requires attention but the unit will continue to work for the meantime
Red codes require immediate attention and the unit generally will not continue to operate until the code has been cleared
When you receive a code, call clockwork to assess and repair the issue!
MONITORING YOUR GENERATOR
Our mobile app allows homeowners to receive updates and notices such as error codes, and maintenance requirements
If you are unable or prefer not to use the app, it is important to make a habit of regularly (suggested weekly) going outside and taking a look at your generator screen to check for service or maintenance notices
If you will be travelling, you should ask someone to regularly check your generator screen for you, unless you will be monitoring from the app
These are general guidelines and may vary from model to model, always follow the instructions in your user manual.
