Heat pump or air conditioner?

In Ottawa’s climate, where temperatures can range from sweltering summers to frigid winters, a heat pump is the perfect year-round solution for comfort. Unlike traditional air conditioners, which only cool your home, heat pumps provide both heating and cooling in one energy-efficient system, seamlessly pairing with your existing furnace for the perfect dual-fuel solution!

Do heat pumps save you money?

According to a study conducted by CanmetENERGY,

  • Homeowners switching from an oil furnace to a CC-ASHP could expect to save $1000-$3500 in annual utility costs.

  • Switching from electric resistance heating to a CC-ASHP generated $700-1900 in savings, depending on electricity rates and the climate they were operated in.

  • Savings from switching from natural gas ranged from $50-150 per year in most regions of Canada, including the fixed natural gas charges ($150-300/year) eliminated by going fully electric.

What type of heat pump is right for me?

A heat pump is a system that pumps heat from one area to another. It has both heating and cooling capabilities because it can either pump heat into your home or out of it, depending on what the goal is for that time of year.Heat pumps are categorized by their energy source, there are three main types;

Water Source Heat Pump

Water source heat pumps extract heat from water. A well is dug deep down to access the water flowing beneath the ground. They require electricity to be powered but the energy output is far greater than how much energy is used to operate them. These are by far the most efficient types of heat pumps. However, due to there high installation cost and complexity, being new to the Canadian market, and little availability they are rarely used.

Ground Source Heat Pump

Ground source heat pumps, also known as geothermal heat pumps collect thermal energy using a system of piping loops that are dug below the ground. The ground temperature remains constant, regardless of what the temperature is outside, making them a reliable energy source. However, to be installed they require sufficient room for the piping systems, and as such are most typically used in agricultural settings. Ground source heat pumps are more energy efficient than air source heat pumps, costing less in monthly utility bills but are more complex to install, the installation cost is many times the price of air source heat pumps, and are far less common in Canada.

Air Source Heat Pump

Air source heat pumps are the type of heat pump you might be most familiar with. Also written as ASHP and ccASHP. They are the most common type of heat pump in Ottawa, widely gaining popularity since 2020, despite being on the Canadian market since the late 1970’s. These heat pumps are efficient, affordable, and relatively easy to install.

Ductless Heat Pump

Ductless heat pumps, also called mini splits, are able to heat or cool the entire home, or just part of the home, without the use of ductwork. They have an outdoor unit, again like a central air conditioner, but inside there are indoor units in each room or your home you would like to provide comfort. Central Heat Pump

Central heat pumps are installed like a central conditioner. They have an indoor coil above your furnace and an outdoor condenser. Just like central air conditioning, they utilize your homes existing duct work to circulate the conditioned air throughout your home.
