😊 March is International Women’s Month. I wanted to share this amazing organization called Women in HVACR Canada. This group was started in 2020 with the goal of supporting women in the trade and having strength in numbers! 🥰 ✅ This gives women an opportunity to see other women in the trade, ✅ To inspire women to know this trade IS for them, ✅ To offer mentorship and support, ✅ And to provide ongoing education and networking in a comfortable environment! Does this vent even work?? 😩 No air seems to be coming out!! Here’s a trick to test if your vent is working. On your thermostat turn your fan to on OR wait until you hear your furnace come on. Take a Kleenex and hold it up next to the vent. 💨 If the Kleenex gets pushed then the vent is blowing the warm air into the room. 💨 If the Kleenex gets pulled then the vent is pulling the air back to the furnace. This is called a cold air return. Your homes HVAC system is constantly circulating air to keep it at the right temperature, filter out dust and other particles, and draw in fresh air from outside to keep you comfortable and safe. 🍃 💨 If nothing happens with the Kleenex then most likely this vent is not connected to your system. How could this be? 🤔 Well, this isn’t uncommon in older homes (built prior to the 1940s). These homes have seen many changes in their HVAC systems and some venting may be too big to fit with your new furnace (though occasionally it is also due to technician hastiness). If your home is newer and nothing happens with the Kleenex then you may have a blocked vent and this should be addressed right away by a certified technician to prevent further damage. Cold spots in your home? 🥶 ☃️ There are many factors for this, including the age of your home, how it was built, leaky windows and doors, poor insulation, and improper heating system. ☃️ Here are some steps you can take to reduce cold spots in your home: ☃️ Keep your vents clear and open! People will often close them in certain rooms hoping that will bring more heat to a certain area; this isn’t the case, as it just limits your duct works ability to circulate the warm air. ☃️ Keep your bedroom doors open, again, increasing air flow in the home ☃️ Turn your fan on your thermostat to ‘on’ rather than ‘auto’. On will keep the fan running constantly rather than just when the furnace kicks on. This again, will increase air flow in your home. ☃️ Hot air rises so if you have ceiling fans, take advantage of them by having them run in a clockwise direction in winter (and counter clockwise in summer) to circulate the air back down to wear you can feel it. ☃️ Annual maintenance and tune ups for your furnace system can help keep your furnace running smoothly and efficiently, maximizing its ability to heat your home. This will also allow your technician to make adjustments to your fan speed if necessary to ensure it can keep up with the demand. ☃️ If you are planning a renovation this could be excellent time to access if more cold air return and heat runs can be added in. Basements are notorious for being cold. One reason for this is they are often left unfinished when a home is built. People later add in rooms without considering their duct work. These runs may not contain heat registers, or may not contain enough and lack of cold air returns is often a culprit of cold spots! ❄️ As snowfalls are slowly accumulating here in the Ottawa region, the level of snow on your property is rising. ❄️ When you are outside shovelling your driveway and steps, don’t forget about your appliance vents! ❄️ Gas appliances, such as a furnace, hot water tank, and ERV system have two vents: an exhaust vent and a fresh air intake. ❄️ The exhaust vent points up toward the sky, and allows the burnt used gas to escape your home, so carbon monoxide isn’t accumulating inside. ❄️ The fresh air intake points downward and allows your home to constantly bring in a new supply of fresh air, avoiding carbon dioxide build up from our own exhaled breath. ❄️ When these vents get blocked it poses a hazard to the air inside your home because it prevents these vents from fulfilling their jobs. ❄️ Be proactive and check your vents each week and after heavy snow falls! ❄️ Stay safe! 🥰
